What to Do: Day Trips, Excursions, and Experiences
From Hanoi: Ha Long Bay and the Lan Ha Bay Alternative
The flagship excursion from Hanoi is Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its limestone karsts rising out of calm green water.
A lot of travelers do the one-day rush trip from Hanoi, and I would strongly recommend against it. The journey there and back alone is several hours each way, which leaves you very little time to actually enjoy anything.
My advice is to add Cat Ba Island to your itinerary instead. Stay there for three or four days and take a boat out from there.
What you end up visiting is Lan Ha Bay, just to the south of Cat Ba, and in my opinion it is significantly better than the main Ha Long Bay circuit. Fewer tourists, the same dramatic scenery. It is well worth the extra planning.
From Ho Chi Minh City: War History and the Mekong Delta
HCMC’s excursion highlights take a very different direction. Within the city itself, the War Remnants Museum is a powerful and worthwhile stop. It covers the Vietnam War from the Vietnamese perspective, and it is not an easy visit, but it is an important one.
About 70 km outside the city, the Cu Chi Tunnels are a remarkable piece of history. The underground network stretches for around 250 km on multiple levels and was used during the war. I found it quite impressive, both as a place and as a lesson in what people are capable of building under pressure.
The Mekong Delta is another option entirely. You can reach towns like My Tho, Ben Tre, or Can Tho on a day trip, and the river landscapes there look nothing like the karst scenery up north. That contrast alone makes it worth doing.
I did the mekong visit but I combined it with the Cambodia crossing border, a 3-day adventure.
Which City Offers the Better Day Trip Experience
Neither city wins here outright, because the excursions serve completely different interests.
Hanoi excursions lean toward natural scenery and landscapes.
HCMC excursions lean toward history, war heritage, and river culture.
If you are drawn to dramatic coastal scenery and fewer crowds, Hanoi’s surroundings will suit you better.
If war history and the slow rhythm of river life appeal to you more, HCMC has the edge. The type of traveler you are matters more than which city is objectively better here.
