The Best Cruise for Adventure: 5 Expedition Voyages for Active Travelers

This post is also available in :

A cruise trip doesn’t have to mean buffets, sea days and a view of the coastline from a deck chair. The best cruise for adventure mixes both worlds. You get the comfort of a ship, and you spend your days kayaking below glacier fronts, hiking across volcanic islands or getting in the water where few conventional ships go.

That’s what makes an expedition voyage better than a classic cruise. Smaller vessels and specialist guides bring you closer to wildlife and landscapes that big ships can’t reach from major ports. You get real adventure by day and a proper bed at night.

For active travelers, luxury lies partly in how well the expedition is run. Equipment is ready when conditions allow an excursion, and guides know the region in detail. A comfortable ship waits at the end of a demanding day ashore.

On the five cruises below, each day centers on active excursions, wildlife observation and time spent in remote landscapes.

Snorkeling Coral Reefs and Climbing Karst Lookouts

Raja Ampat, Indonesia
A man stands on a boat at sunset, holding a red and white flag. Calm water, green hills, and a colorful sky fill the background—capturing the tranquil beauty of a Komodo boat trip.

Raja Ampat spreads across hundreds of forested islands and limestone islets at the heart of the Coral Triangle. Beneath the water, coral walls, shallow gardens and current-swept channels support manta rays, wobbegong sharks, sea turtles and dense schools of reef fish.

Above the surface, karst formations rise from sheltered lagoons in layers of green and gray.

Days can move between snorkeling or diving and climbing to viewpoints over the archipelago. At Piaynemo, a steep staircase reaches a lookout above a cluster of rounded limestone islands. Other landings lead to beaches, forest trails and village communities.

The contrast between the underwater reefs and the elevated island views gives this cruise trip much of its range. Island-hopping aboard a Raja Ampat yacht charter lets you explore reefs, viewpoints and sheltered anchorages without returning to the same base each night.

A smaller vessel carries snorkeling equipment and tenders for reaching dive sites and island landing points, with specialist guides leading each excursion.

Back onboard, private cabins, freshly prepared meals and space to recover let you spend each day in the water or ashore.

If you want to dive rather than snorkel, you can get certified with PADI before you go. Already in Indonesia? My guide to a Komodo island boat trip shows another way to see the archipelago by water.

Kayaking Desert Islands and Whale Watching

Baja California, Mexico

Baja California’s coastline is shaped by cactus-covered desert, volcanic islands and nutrient-rich waters. In the Sea of Cortez, red cliffs descend into clear bays where sea lions, dolphins, rays and seabirds gather around rocky shores.

The absence of large coastal settlements gives many anchorages a remote feel, particularly around the islands of Loreto Bay National Park and Espíritu Santo.

Kayaks let guests enter narrow coves, paddle below cliffs and reach beaches beyond the main vessel. You may see dolphins riding beside the boat or sea lions moving through the water near their colonies.

Some itineraries also visit the Pacific lagoons where gray whales gather during winter, while the Sea of Cortez is known for seasonal sightings of blue and humpback whales.

Smaller expedition vessels can anchor close to the islands and carry kayaks, snorkeling equipment and inflatable boats for daily excursions. Naturalists guide the activities and explain how the desert and marine ecosystems meet along the peninsula.

After several hours on the water, you return to comfortable cabins, freshly prepared meals and evening talks about the wildlife you saw that day.

Love whales? I wrote about whale watching in Bahía Solano, Colombia too.

Hiking Glacier Valleys and Rounding Cape Horn

Patagonia, Chile

Chile’s southern fjords cut between snow-covered mountains, Magellanic forests and glaciers descending from the Darwin Range. Many landing sites can only be reached from the water.

That’s why sailing the fjords on a Patagonia cruise is one of the best cruise options for adventure, since it connects forest trails, glacier viewpoints and Cape Horn in one journey.

At Wulaia Bay, trails climb above the water through lenga and coigüe forest. Excursions near Pia Glacier reveal blue ice flowing between steep mountain walls.

At Cape Horn, a landing may include the climb to the albatross memorial and views across the meeting point of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

A smaller expedition vessel can enter channels that conventional cruise ships can’t, and it adjusts daily excursions to the conditions. Specialist guides lead the hikes and explain the region’s glacial and maritime history.

After returning from shore, warm cabins, Chilean wines and carefully prepared meals make a comfortable end to a day spent exploring the fjords.

Canoeing With Pink River Dolphins

Amazon, Peru

In the Peruvian Amazon, rivers spread into narrow tributaries, oxbow lakes and seasonally flooded forest. Pink and gray river dolphins move through these waterways, surfacing near river junctions and quieter lagoons.

Along the banks, dense vegetation supports monkeys, sloths, macaws and kingfishers.

Canoes and small skiffs can enter channels too narrow or shallow for the main vessel. Naturalist guides listen for movement in the canopy and identify dolphins by the curve of a back or the sound of a breath at the surface.

During high-water months, boats can move between partially submerged trees. Lower water levels open more forest trails for guided walks.

The main river vessel goes deeper into the forest and stays a comfortable base between excursions. Air-conditioned suites give relief from the tropical heat, and meals introduce regional fish, fruits and other Peruvian ingredients.

With equipment and guides already onboard, days can begin before sunrise and continue after dark with nocturnal wildlife excursions.

Spotting Polar Bears and Walking Arctic Tundra

Svalbard, Norway

Svalbard is the ideal summer trip cruise for anyone who wants the Arctic without the deep winter. Its mountains, glaciers and broad fjords extend deep into the Arctic Circle.

During summer, the midnight sun lights up tundra scattered with small flowering plants, seabird cliffs crowded with nesting colonies and stretches of sea ice used by seals and polar bears. Walruses gather along beaches, while Arctic foxes move between the shoreline and nesting areas.

Boats follow glacier fronts and the edge of the pack ice as guides scan for wildlife.

Shore landings lead onto tundra where walks may pass old whaling sites, reindeer grazing grounds and viewpoints above the fjords. Expedition teams inspect each landing area before anyone goes ashore and set the route according to wildlife activity and ground conditions.

An ice-strengthened expedition vessel can enter remote fjords while serving as a comfortable base between excursions.

Smaller passenger numbers let groups disembark more efficiently when conditions open up a chance to explore. Heated lounges, a sauna and carefully prepared meals bring warmth after time spent walking or watching for wildlife from the outer decks.

Which of These Voyages Will You Choose?

Think about where you want to spend most of each day. Warm-water expeditions may involve snorkeling Raja Ampat’s reefs, kayaking off Baja California or entering Amazon tributaries by canoe.

Colder routes take a different form, with hikes beside Patagonian glaciers or wildlife searches across Svalbard’s tundra and sea ice.

The ship should support the way you want to explore. When you compare each cruise trip, look at passenger numbers, guide-to-guest ratios, included activities and how much time you spend away from the vessel.

A well-run expedition voyage makes remote coastlines, islands and river systems easier to reach. It then gives you the space, service and comfort to do it all again the next day. That mix of cruising and adventure is why these trips beat a classic cruise.
