Capturing Cartagena: The Best Time to Explore
For the perfect photo, set your alarm early. The city center is quiet and magical at dawn, with soft light and empty streets. You’ll have the colorful facades and charming balconies all to yourself. It’s a safe time to wander, and you’ll feel the city waking up around you. Nighttime is a different story, the streets come alive with music and crowds, but for photos, morning is best.

Chivas: The Party on Wheels
One of the most fun things to do in Cartagena is hop on a chiva. These open-air buses are rolling parties, filled with music, dancing, and laughter.
As you tour the city, you’ll meet fellow travelers and locals, all sharing the same good mood. It’s a safe, lively way to see the sights and make new friends.
Scuba Diving with Cartagena Divers
If you love the sea, try scuba diving with Cartagena Divers. Just 20 minutes from the port, you’ll find two incredible dive sites.
One is the National Naval Museum, where sunken ships have been turned into reefs for corals and fish. The underwater world here is vibrant and full of life, making it a must for any diver.

Island Hopping to Islas del Rosario

Exploring Cartagena’s Distinct Districts
Centro Histórico: The Soul of the City
The historic center is Cartagena’s most famous district. Its narrow streets are lined with shops, cafés, and restaurants, all painted in bright colors. Wandering here is a delight, with hidden plazas and charming architecture at every turn.
Whenever I want to book a hotel, I always check both Booking.com and Agoda first, since they usually have the same options but sometimes one has a better price than the other, so it’s worth comparing both, but if I’m looking for something cheaper and I also want to meet other travelers, I go with Hostelworld instead.
Getsemaní: Where Art Comes Alive
Next to the historic center, Getsemaní is known for its street art and creative energy. The district is quieter but full of charm, with graffiti murals and local artists selling their work. It’s the perfect place to feel the city’s artistic pulse.
Bocagrande: Modern Cartagena
Bocagrande is a contrast to the old city. Here, tall white buildings and fancy shops line the streets. It’s interesting to see, but for me, it doesn’t capture the real spirit of Cartagena.
Hidden Gems: Cafés, Parks, and Rooftops
Stefano Bistro: A Breath of Fresh Air
For a relaxed lunch or coffee, Stefano Bistro is a standout. Its outdoor tables sit on a quiet street, surrounded by a public garden. The breeze and greenery make it a refreshing escape from the bustling city.
Centenario Park: Where Nature Meets the City
Centenario Park might look like any other city park—until you look up. Sloths and titi monkeys live in the trees, and you might spot seven or ten sloths hanging lazily above. The titi monkeys are playful and may even try to steal a coconut from your hand.
Baroca: Sunset Cocktails with a View
Baroca is a rooftop bar with a stunning view over Centenario Park. Its red tiles, cool cocktails, and DJ sets create a perfect vibe for sunset. Parrots sometimes fly overhead, adding to the magic.
Abaco Libros y Café: A Literary Oasis
Abaco is the only library in the city center, and it’s a beautiful one. Shelves of books surround cozy tables, and the coffee is excellent. It’s the ideal spot to escape the noise and enjoy a quiet read.
Casa Boheme: A World Away
Dining at Casa Boheme feels like stepping into another world. The decor is exotic, and if you’re lucky, you’ll catch a belly dancing performance just for guests. It’s a unique, memorable experience.

Cartagena is a city that never sleeps, but it’s also a place of quiet moments. Whether you’re exploring its colorful streets, diving into the sea, or relaxing with a cocktail, there’s always something new to discover. Every visit feels like a new adventure, and every corner holds a story.
Colombia has so many hidden gems, the streets of Cartagena is one of them.
Once you’ve visited Cartagena, continue along the coast to explore places like Taganga Bay, Tayrona Park, or venture a bit further into the mountains to Minca. This is a great combination of adventure and budget-friendly travel.
