How to Get to the Dois Irmaos Trailhead
The trail begins at the top of Vidigal, a favela located between Leblon and São Conrado in Rio’s South Zone.
You cannot access the standard Dois Irmaos trail from another side. Vidigal is the normal and practical starting point.
Step 1: Go to Vidigal Entrance
The easiest way is to order an Uber directly to the entrance of Vidigal.
You will arrive near a large roundabout, where you will see lots of moto-taxi drivers waiting. They transport local residents up the hill, but they also take hikers to the start of the trail every day.
You can say: “Dois Irmãos, trilha.”
They will understand immediately.
Step 2: Take a Moto-Taxi Up the Hill
The moto-taxi ride usually costs around 10 reais. Prices can change, so confirm before leaving. Bring some cash because moto taxi don’t have card terminal, or use pix.
If you’re heading to South America, WanderWallet is what I use for my money.
Do not walk from the entrance of Vidigal to the trailhead unless you really want a long uphill workout. It can take close to two hours, it is steep, and it is not the interesting part of the experience.
The ride itself is memorable. You pass through Vidigal’s narrow streets, concrete houses, local shops, residents going about their day, and incredible viewpoints along the way. Then, the driver usually drops you near a football field at the upper part of the favela.
Wear the helmet if one is offered. The roads are steep, narrow and busy.
Step 3: Pay the Trail Entrance Fee
From the football field, cross to the other side and you should find the beginning of the trail.
When I visited recently, there was a small shop and an official person collecting an entrance fee of around 10 reais. It is worth having cash with you because card payments are not always available, and mobile signal can be unreliable higher up.
Some places accept Pix, Brazil’s instant payment system. If you are a foreign visitor, services such as WanderWallet can make Pix payments possible, but I would still bring real cash as a backup.
Trail fees, opening arrangements and access rules can change, so always check the latest information locally before heading up.
