If you do not have enough time to spend a night or two in Huacachina, you might be planning to see the Nazca Lines or Islas Ballestas in Paracas as well. From those cities or even from Lima, you can do a day tour to Huacachina. Many tourist groups depart from these cities and will bring you to Huacachina for a day of sand and dunes. I personally recommend staying a night or two in Huacachina to really get the vibe of the place, but sometimes time does not allow it. Even if you only visit for a day, you will probably climb a dune, have lunch here, do a buggy ride in the desert, and watch the sunset. There are plenty of tours from various cities to visit Huacachina, so it is easy to fit into your Peru adventure.
Activities in Huacachina: Adventure Awaits in the Desert
Buggy and Sandboarding Tour
No visit to Huacachina is complete without experiencing the famous huacachina buggy and sandboarding tour. These tours take you on a thrilling ride across the dunes in powerful dune buggies, followed by the chance to try sandboarding on the steep slopes. The adrenaline rush of racing over the sand and sliding down the dunes is unforgettable. Most tours take place in the evening, but you can find options throughout the day. There are two main options: a one-hour tour (around 35 soles) starting at 5 pm, or a two-hour tour (around 60 soles) starting at 4 pm. Both are designed to let you watch the sunset before heading back to Huacachina.
Tours are suitable for both beginners and experienced boarders. The sandboard equipment comes in three options. The first, included in the price, is a basic sandboard where you lay down and slide down the dunes. The second and third are real snowboard and ski equipment, which require a bit more skill. Renting a snowboard costs about 40 soles, and renting skis is about 60 soles. A traveler in my group tried the skis and said it was fun but not quite the same sensation as on snow, especially since the sand was a bit hard where we did the sandboarding. There are softer dunes nearby that might offer a better experience for those with more experience.
Simply Rent a Sandboard
If you prefer a slower pace, you can rent a sandboard and explore the dunes at your own rhythm. This is a great way to practice your skills, take in the views, and enjoy the peaceful desert environment. In the oasis, you’ll find stores to rent equipment for one or more hours. Once you have your gear, you can climb the dunes next to Huacachina and slide down. The dunes here are much higher than those used during the buggy tour, and the sand is much softer. This may be a better option if you are truly a fan of snowboarding or skiing and want more freedom to explore.

Paragliding Next to the Dunes
For those seeking a unique perspective, try paragliding next to the dunes. Soaring above the desert oasis, you get a bird’s-eye view of the vast sand dunes in Peru and the lush lagoon below. This activity is available through local operators and is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for adventure lovers. The price for paragliding is around 110 USD, and it lasts about 15 minutes, with video included. You can do it in the evening next to the oasis of Huacachina or in the morning in the dunes closer to the sea, as you need wind for the best flight conditions.
Wine and Pisco Tasting
Nearby Huacachina, you will find several wine and pisco producers. Visiting these local bodegas is a great way to learn more about the region’s agricultural traditions and to taste authentic Peruvian wine and pisco. Many tours include visits to vineyards and distilleries, where you can see the production process and sample different varieties. This is a relaxing and cultural activity that complements the high-energy adventures of the dunes.
