Flores & El Petén: Is It Worth the Detour?

When you look at a map of Guatemala, Flores and the El Petén region seem so far away from the rest of the country’s classic stops. If you’re coming from Belize, then Flores makes perfect sense as your first Guatemalan destination.

But if you’re already in Guatemala City, Antigua, or Lake Atitlán, you might want to think twice before making the long journey north. Here’s why:

Table of Contents

The Town: Flores and Its Limits

Flores itself is a tiny island town, and honestly, the “cool part” is just this island.

It’s charming at first glance, with its cobbled streets, colorful houses, and the lake all around. But after an hour or so of wandering, you’ve basically seen it all.

The rest of the city, Santa Elena, is a typical Guatemalan town-busy, a bit chaotic, and not particularly photogenic. It’s a slice of real local life, with everyday shops, markets, and people going about their routines.

While it’s authentic and has its own charm, don’t expect Instagrammable corners or vibrant street scenes like you’ll find in the colonial city of Antigua or some of the small cute city around the Lake Atitlán.

Nightlife & Atmosphere

One thing Flores does have is a lively nightlife, especially on the island. There’s always music playing, bars open late, and parties happening somewhere.

If you’re looking for a fun night out, you’ll find it here. But honestly, you can find good parties and live music in many other places across Guatemala.

So I wouldn’t make the trip just for that.

The Real Draw: Mayan Ruins & Jungle

The main reason most travelers come all the way to Flores is to visit the famous Mayan sites of Tikal and Yaxha, and to experience the surrounding jungle.

If you’re only going to visit one Mayan site in Guatemala, make it count. I chose Yaxha over Tikal, and it was the right call for me. Yaxha is far less crowded-you might even have the place almost to yourself, especially in the afternoon. The atmosphere is wild and peaceful at the same time, with the sounds of howler and spider monkeys echoing through the trees.

You can actually climb some of the pyramids here (a rare treat!), and the site is reached by a short boat ride that feels like a mini jungle adventure in itself.

Those two maya site are some of the most beautiful in Central america.

Watching the sunset from one of the ancient pyramids is a highlight, even if you don’t see the sun dip below the horizon (the viewing platform is more of a wooden terrace in the trees).

It’s the feeling of being surrounded by jungle, history, and wildlife that makes it so special.

If you’re set on seeing Tikal, just know it’s much more developed and popular, so expect more people and a bit less of that “lost in the jungle” vibe.

Both sites are incredible in their own way, but you really only need to pick one-don’t stress about trying to do both unless you’re a hardcore ruins enthusiast.

Jungle Tours & Activities

As for jungle tours, I didn’t do any in Flores because I’d already done plenty in Belize. If Guatemala is your only stop in Central America, then taking a jungle tour here could be a great addition to your trip.

There are options for night walks, wildlife spotting, and even multi-day adventures deeper into the rainforest. If you do try one, let me know how it goes-I’d love to hear if it’s worth the hype!

Should You Go?

So, is Flores and El Petén worth the detour? If you’re a Mayan history buff, love wildlife, or are coming from Belize, absolutely. The region has a unique, remote feel that you won’t find elsewhere in Guatemala.

But if your time is limited and you’re already exploring the highlands, volcanoes, and lakes, don’t feel like you’re missing out if you skip it.

Flores is a nice stop, but the real magic is in the ruins and the jungle-not the town itself.

  • -If you go, plan your visit around the Mayan sites and give yourself time to enjoy the slower pace of life.
  • Bring mosquito repellent-the jungle is beautiful, but the bugs are relentless!
  • If you’re short on time, prioritize Yaxha for a quieter, more intimate experience with nature and history.
  • For nightlife, the island is where it’s at, but don’t expect anything you can’t find elsewhere in Guatemala.
